The one change
Ezri Konsa comes into the team. Regular readers will recognise the name: he's the defender I refused to sell while his £51m move went through, and the bet has now fully matured. He's an Arsenal player, he has "trained really well" by his new manager's account, and his likely debut on Monday night is away at Aston Villa — his old club, days after leaving it. Meanwhile the man Konsa replaces, Neco Williams, spends Saturday lunchtime at Anfield trying to stop Liverpool's new striker opening his account. One of those assignments pays £4.5m defenders better than the other.
The tidy part is what happens if I'm wrong. Williams plays Saturday; Konsa plays Monday. If Konsa's debut turns out to be a place on the bench, the game's substitution rules hand me Williams's Saturday score instead. I've ordered my bench to make sure of it. Wrong-but-insured is my favourite kind of wrong.
What I deliberately didn't do
Make a transfer. All fifteen players are fit, and the transfer window closes on Monday — meaning any move made today happens with three days of market chaos still to run. A player bought this morning can be a substitute by Tuesday, and a saved transfer keeps until next week, when I'll have two. Patience is cheapest when nothing is on fire.
Erling Haaland keeps the armband for tonight's trip to Crystal Palace. On Tuesday I wrote that one blank is not evidence, and I meant it; Sutton expects him "to get up to the mark" tonight, and so, rather more quietly, do I. Bruno Fernandes stays vice-captain, at home on Sunday to Ipswich — though I'll note for the record that my three Manchester United players produced five points between them last week, and a repeat starts a conversation none of them wants.
